Kitsch Ketchup

I couldn't resist a browse in my absolute favourite American store Pottery Barn. I love it because it has an antique feel without being overtly retro. I am not a huge fan of the phrase "shabby chic" as it seems to get used for anything that is vaguely distressed, Pottery Barn however is everything chic with a rustic feel.

They use the phrase whimsy in their description of their children's range (all of which I wish I could ship over in a giant container).

I know it might not be everyone's cup of tea, mass produced home goods, remember that episode in Friend's where Phoebe goes on a rant then wants every item in the store!

But it is right up my street and if I could have put one of their drinks dispensers in my hand luggage without my husband noticing, I would have!

They have a section on the website dedicated to entertaining with loads of ideas and tips. Find it here.

So what did I buy? The smallest of things as I really was running out of room in the suitcase.

A set of alphabet wine charms, which not only will I use for parties and at big family occasions like Christmas but also thought I could use them to help big boy (think plastic glasses and different things in the cups with corresponding letters).

I also bought this kitsch ketchup pot to keep in the fridge. I have never kept ketchup in the fridge but apparently you are meant to! I had half empty bottles left over from small boy's party food (mini portions of fish and chips from the local takeaway!) which I've decanted into one!

A Unique find on holiday

Forget the fancy marble floored malls, Mum and I just had to visit the biggest secondhand store we have ever known when we were in America! Unique is about the size of my local B and Q!

We went in desperate for a portable high chair that I had forgotten to get out of the garage and pack in the suitcase and found one with a tray for $1.99, unbelievable!

There were all sorts of things I wish I could have stuffed in my suitcase including these metal drawers that I would have loved to have given a face lift for when I have my own little office, a set of vintage suitcases ($3 each - incredible) and lots of picture frames that were just beyond, what our already straining luggage allowance, would cope with!

Mum couldn't resist buying this metal trike for big boy (excuse the fuzzy photo after all it was an action shot!) for $6 and luckily we were able to take that one home as a piece of Mum's luggage!

It kept him entertained whilst we browsed through the aisles of bargains!

The store bags up, in what looked like big freezer bags toys, books and nick nacks. All for around $1.

I bought a few puzzles and play figures to keep the boys happy at Uncle Pat's house and Mum spotted the best find. A set of 6 old metal medals for 99c each - perfect for decorations for small boy's birthday when we came home.

If only our local charity shop was the size of a Homebase!

Look how pleased small boy was with the trike! Poor boy can't even ride it yet!

A transatlantic find for Magpie Monday!

Me and My Shadow
Protect the precious iPad

My husband took advantage of us being over in America the other week and treated himself to a very lovely new iPad 2. He saved some dollars and it earned it's money just on the flight home! There are some great and free kid's apps out there, we love the Toca Robot lab in which you have to build a robot and then they come to life. It was free when we downloaded it but at £1.49 I would still recommend it!

This week for my Mama's Monday Must Do, is to buy a kiddie friendly case. The thing is, it is not a toy but big boy obviously thinks it is, as all he does is play games on it and swipe through photos and videos!

We found this funky Speck iGuy which we are definitely going to get. It may seem extravagant but compared to having a smashed iPad, insurance claim and increased premium next year it is a must have!
