How to Style a Perfect Party Sweet Table

I have become more than slightly obsessed with the American style party food tables. I love the symmetry, the precise placement of treats and the use of props to make your buffet more enticing.

It makes very ordinary food look extraordinary.

Top Tips for the Perfect Party Table:

Sketch your vision beforehand!

That way you know what you need to source and how much of everything to buy.

The danger with assembling your table on the day is that you overbuy on food and can't fit everything on the table! Unless you are a creative genius and can do it from scratch there and then!

Have a central feature.

Start with a central focus point and work outwards. I used his initial wall letter from above his bed propped up on a toy wagon! The more personal you can make the props the better, so root through their toy boxes!

I found this ferris wheel cupcake stand and just used the wheel as a prop!

The birthday cake would make a great focus point too. I always think it's such a shame to keep the cake hidden until it's time to sing, so show it off for the whole party!

Create height and interest.

If you have made beautiful cake and lollies you want to show them off! But on a flat table they can get lost. I used crepe paper to wrap up blocks of polystyrene I bought in the local DIY centre, so that I could simply poke the lolly sticks into them. Minimal effort, maximum impact!

Use cake stands and upturned baskets, I even raided the children's miniature chairs. I found one gum ball machine in a charity shop and one in the local £1 store, which were great for the grown up nuts!

Think about symmetry.

It makes it easier to work outwards, displaying in opposite pairs. Or go completely and purposely mismatched, creating depth with taller storage jars at the back of the table and bowls at the front.

Think mini!

Use cake cases as mini containers instead of one big bowl. Children love having individual portions and it just looks sweeter! Rigid cup cake cases work well turned upside down too as mini stands!

Create a backdrop.

You could use garden canes to make a frame and old duvet covers are fab as a backdrop sheet. The tent canopy is actually for above Sammy's bed, but teamed with the striped fabric, made a perfect mini big top. For a cheap version use twisted crepe paper streamers. You could easily create a 5ft wide backdrop for only a few pounds. Just tie at the top and pin at the bottom.

Cover any odd edges for a clean, professional look. I used an old piece of hessian material for the tablecloth (I would always go for a paper or fabric cloth over shiny plastic - it instantly looks more expensive, when really paper is cheaper!)

I covered the edge where the two fabrics met with a roll of paper tickets and some brilliantly effective paper fans. I stapled gunned them in place and teamed with the personalised bunting, thought it really had the wow factor. (Photo below by Emily Beale Photography.)

Less is not more!

Think colour, think props, think labels and tags! Tie a ribbon around the jar, print some little labels. It instantly creates a impression. It took seconds to add the ticket ribbons around the lolly stands and the cuddly Circus toys were perfect partners for the food itself. Have a theme in mind and then just go for it!

And if anyone thinks it is over the top take it as a compliment! I bet they wished their party buffet looked as fab as yours!

I got such pleasure from preparing all the details and everyone noticed the finishing touches on the day.

Get snapping.

And finally - leave enough time to photograph it! I would have been so disappointed not to have got some lovely photos of all our hard work! And make sure you 'pin' your photos to Pinterest so others can be inspired.

Father's Day Gift Ideas

What with Sammy's birthday extravaganza I have almost forgotten to get organised for Father's Day this year!

Last year I made a sweet Fuzzy Felt Face game with the boys, which the three of them had a lovely time playing with.

But this year I have wrapped up a beautiful pair of stripe shorts from the Joules clothing new Summer range of men's shorts - perfect for our weekend away to Honfleur! Since we booked this French adventure, I have been drawn to nautical outfits - well we are hopping across the water by ferry you know!

Heavy weight that they won't get terribly creased but lightweight that they will be perfect for a warm summers day. Tailored just enough to be smart for a romantic harbour side dinner but casual enough with a pair of flip flops, for the beach. Plus the boys have a similar pair from last summer, not that Richard will consciously let me dress them all the same - but I might try!

I think a lovely gift and a handmade present are the perfect mix.

You can try a couple of my other DIY ideas including the lipstick kisses wall art (who doesn't love kisses from their darlings) or the homemade photograph book Why I love my Daddy.

What will you be giving to the Father of your children this year?! A present from you or a present from the kids? Or will you be like me and go for one of each?!

Psst listen up - I was sent these spiffing shorts as a gift from Joules.

Wonderful Wedding Wednesday - Want That Wedding!

I am so lucky to feature this week, one of my absolute favourite wedding bloggers!

Sonia the genius behind Want That Wedding very kindly agreed to let me share her incredible 1930's inspired wedding in Surrey, to help support The Wedding Wishing Well.

If you are new to these Wonderful Wedding Wednesday posts then let me explain.

Every Wednesday I post about a wonderful wedding or wedding related feature. All to help raise awareness and hopefully much needed funds, for an incredible charity based in Taunton, close to where I live in Weston super Mare.

The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation helps fund and organise special wedding days for terminally ill people and I hope that by featuring some of my friends, fellow bloggers and wonderful wedding suppliers, I can encourage my readers to help them in a very small, very valued way.

All I ask is that if you enjoyed the post, donate just £1 to The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation.  Every penny and pound counts when it comes to weddings, so make it your good deed of the day! Donate HERE.

You can read about Sonia and Chris' love story here

Now let me show you their amazing wedding! Their day was captured by the talented Sergerius Bruce.

Sonia says "From the moment Chris and I laid eyes on Botleys Mansion in Ottershaw, Surrey we were enamoured… around the curving driveway loomed the most beautiful 18th century palladian mansion… We mounted the steps and entered through the impressive doorway into the grand reception room and felt like we had stepped straight into a Jane Austin novel. We fell in love. As we moved from room to room our breath was taken away with the grandiose surroundings and the impressive crystal chandeliers hanging from every ceiling.  I tried to hide my feelings after quite a few let downs but Chris looked like the proverbial cat who’d got the cream… this was it, the search was over… we’d found our venue"

Sonia fell in love with a Jenny Packham dress, whilst researching art deco inspired vintage dresses. Sonia accessorised with a Jenny Packham Acacia II headpiece, her earrings were delicate art deco style drops in thin rectangles and were chosen to compliment her art deco style emerald cut engagement ring.

Jamie Aston suggested ragged tulips for Sonia's bouquet surrounded by ostrich feathers. A gorgeous piece of crystal embellished material held the bouquet together. Purple anemone were chosen for the bridesmaids flowers and they matched Chris’ button hole to the bridal bouquet.

Sonia describes the minutes before she entered the ceremony room, "Due to last minute prep I arrived 15 minutes late for the ceremony!! I was so nervous, my heart felt like it was going to pop and my throat was so dry I had to ask for water twice. My dad was incredibly emotional which still brings tears to my eyes and my bridesmaids felt even more nervous than me!"

Sonia explained the ceremony room as "so beautiful it needed little decoration, we hung simple bouquets from the chairs that framed the aisle.  At the front of the room was the most magnificent bloom of flowers. Jamie arranged hydrangeas, stocks and roses all in a beautiful translucent black vase."

It was so lovely to read that there wasn't a dry eye in the house when they said their vows.

Their beautiful cake was a labour of love and Sonia retells the story, "Our beautiful art deco wedding cake was created and designed by Pat & Chas Castle.  Pat said the wedding cake was the most difficult she’s ever created! Serious concentration was required for the intricate detailing and a steady hand. It was totally worth it though Pat, the cake looked incredibly elegant. The cake topper was picked to compliment the understated design and is called Circle of Love. "

Sonia and Chris' first dance was to You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne – a song which holds a special place in their hearts. When they first started dating Chris recorded a compilation CD featuring this song and Sonia immediately fell in love with Ray’s incredibly soulful voice.  The words of this song resonate with the emotions of their relationship and what they mean to each other.

Thank you so much Sonia, for letting me share your wonderful wedding and for inspiring thousands upon thousands of others. In the words of Sonia.... keep wanting!
